Naughty Dog’s critically acclaimed masterpiece The Last of Us is set to make a comeback on September 2. The PlayStation-exclusive blockbuster, which was first released on PlayStation 3 in 2013 and then remastered for PlayStation 4 in July 2014, has been completely remade to take advantage of the PlayStation 5’s next-gen hardware.
And while some are giving Naughty Dog a hard time for remaking a game that still feels so fresh – which really speaks to how far along the original game was for its time – it’s important to remember that The Last of Us is nearly a decade old. . There’s a whole generation of gamers who may have been too young to play the original when it first came out.
If you’re planning on picking up The Last of Us Part 1, there are currently two editions of the game you can pre-order on PS5. There is the standard edition which costs $69.99 and the digital deluxe editions for $79.99. Here’s what’s included in each.
The Last of Us Part 1 Standard Edition
If you’re just looking to experience the full story of The Last of Us, then this is for you. It’s $69.99, the same as any next-gen PS5 version.
It also comes with the prequel chapter Left Behind which is split into two stories: the first takes place three weeks before the events of The Last of Us, and the second takes place during the “Winter” chapter of the main story. (which I won’t spoil).
Even if you’ve played The Last of Us on PS3 or PS4 before, this version of the game might be worth revisiting. It’s been completely rebuilt from the ground up to take advantage of the latest PlayStation 5 technology. From more realistic lighting and atmosphere to more complex environments and creative reimaginings of certain areas, this is the version of the game that Naughty Dog originally considered. There’s also faster loading, 3D sound and adaptive triggers/haptic feedback.
The Last of Us Part 1 Digital Deluxe Edition
For $10 more you can get The Last of Us Part 1 Digital Deluxe Edition. This edition costs $79.99 and comes with a few early unlocks to help you through the story, such as:
- Two skill upgrades (early unlock)
- Pistol/Rifle Upgrade (Early Unlock)
- Explosive Arrows (Early Unlock)
- Dither Punk Filter (early unlock)
- Speedrun mode (early unlock)
- Six weapon skins (early unlock)
Honestly, if you’re buying The Last of Us Remake, it’s to experience the story. These early unlocks aren’t really necessarily so I’d recommend sticking with the standard edition of the game.
The Last of Us Part I Firefly Edition
When the remake was first announced, there was also The Last of Us Part I Firefly Edition for $99.99. Unfortunately it is now sold out and I don’t think it will return. This release came with a limited-edition SteelBook showcase and The Last of Us: American Dreams Comics #1 through #4 with a new cover. There were also some early unlocks and additional weapons.
