Two British Columbia dogs win at Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show

Two German Shepherd siblings from British Columbia were honored this weekend at the world’s most prestigious dog show.

The 145th Annual Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show took place June 12-13 in Tarrytown, New York, featuring the most impressive pooches from around the world.

Around 2,500 dogs from 206 breeds took part in the event and a Pekingese named Wasabi won the evening’s highest honor: “Best In Show”.

Two German Shepherds from Woodside German Shepherds in Aldergrove were honored at the event.

Woodside’s Arabella was named “Best in Breed” while her sister Bella Jun was the “Select Bitch”. Arabella also placed fourth overall in the ‘Herding Group’.

Last year, Bella Jun received the Best of Opposite Sex award at the annual competition.

Westminster Kennel Club Annual Dog Show

In order to qualify for the Westminster Kennel Club dog show, all entries must be qualified American Kennel Club champions. In order to qualify to compete in Best in Show, Best of Breed winners must compete in group competitions.

According to the Westminster Kennel Club, “Each breed belongs to one of seven groups: Sporting, Hound, Working, Terrier, Toy, Non-Sporting and Herding. Four placements are assigned in each group.”

Due to New York’s COVID-19 regulations impacting the number of attendees allowed at events, Westminster events in 2021 were not open to spectators or vendors.
