TARRYTOWN, NY (WCIA) — An Illinois bloodhound won first prize at the prestigious Westminster Dog Show on Wednesday night, becoming the first-ever dog of his breed to win the Best in Show award.
His show name is Toot My Own Horn, but he’s also called Trumpet.
The four-year-old bloodhound won the competition’s highest honor after being chosen as the best of his breed and group the day before. He is the 146th national event champion and the seventh dog to win the honor.
Trumpet is owned by Chris and Bryan Flessner, Heather Buehner and Tina Kocar.
Buehner has been Trumpet’s manager since he started competing at 10 months old.
“He was sort of born a show dog; his father won the Hound group at Westminster in 2014,” Buehner said. “So we had high hopes for Trumpet.”
Nearly 3,500 dogs entered the 2022 competition, representing approximately 200 breeds in total. Finalists included a French Bulldog, German Shepherd, Maltese, English Setter, Samoyed and Lake Terrier.
